The character must transform in some way such as physically or psychologically. Like, for example, if the protagonist transformed into a physical hero through training, or transformed psychologically into a hero by overcoming some emotional baggage or obstacles.

Like in "The Matrix" when Neo had to not only physically transform through training, he also had to psychologically transform by believing that he is "The One".

Here are links to a video series on YouTube that talks about a 7 point system for story structure. The 7 point system is actually "The Hero's Journey" and can be used for the main plot and each subplot as well.
Beginning on part 4 of the series at time 7:12, author Dan Wells shows how a subplot based on "character" is woven into the main "action" based plot of "The Matrix":

"Dan Wells on Story Structure, part 1 of 5"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcmiqQ9NpPE

"Dan Wells on Story Structure, part 2 of 5"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrP9604BEOM

"Dan Wells on Story Structure, part 3 of 5"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNZDL9-dN8k

"Dan Wells on Story Structure, part 4 of 5"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WC_WWErNd8

"Dan Wells on Story Structure, part 5 of 5"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD-T-ku4ynkAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7970703367799585001.post-80548047784590412042013-11-16T00:53:36.271-08:002013-11-16T00:53:36.271-08:00Writer4Christ and Anon: Exactly. The events of the story drive our characters to be the best they can be, but it is how the characters react to those events that really MAKE the story. ^_^Star-Dreamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14298850366884374226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7970703367799585001.post-26495003488164439212013-11-15T23:24:25.237-08:002013-11-15T23:24:25.237-08:00I think character driven stories are the key to fi...I think character driven stories are the key to finding a writer's unique voice and style.

Most events, if not actually all of them, have already been written about. But how characters see, think, and react to these events is what will be unique to every writer and the writer will inject their own unique feelings and viewpoint into how these events are recieved by their characters.

There are a lot of successful books out that are basically re-tellings of prior stories/premises/themes, but the characters and how they see, feel, and react, are what make the re-tellings different. Just my 2 cents on the subject of character stories. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7970703367799585001.post-28144130728391042372013-11-09T01:23:08.871-08:002013-11-09T01:23:08.871-08:00I think that if the character development feels mo...I think that if the character development feels more important than the events happening, then it's probably a character story.

But then again, events force the best and worst of our characters to come out. Circumstances force the characters to show their inner thoughts bare.Emilyn J Cloverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00892659942186331664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7970703367799585001.post-38388757785129981382013-11-08T08:53:43.986-08:002013-11-08T08:53:43.986-08:00Toby, it is definitely a book worth looking into! ...Toby, it is definitely a book worth looking into! :DStar-Dreamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14298850366884374226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7970703367799585001.post-63869530083799138872013-11-08T05:09:46.021-08:002013-11-08T05:09:46.021-08:00Great thought's here!
